Amazon, you don't really know me as well as you think you do. I know I'm a mug, but when this (certainly fine) book (a war diary by John Guest) can be found elsewhere for $17.50, even I will baulk at topping up Mr Bezos's bank balance to much an extent. Bother someone else please

@stephenfry The alternate explanation is they list the books for several hundred dollars hoping they slip out of print (usually between publisher printings) just in case someone's desperate enough to pay that much.

@stephenfry It's reportedly a money laundering trick using third party book sellers. List a book for several hundred dollars as a "collectible" on a phony bookstore site, then "buy" the book with dirty money. The bookstore now has clean, reported income.
