In the House of Eliot, a period drama set in the competitive world of haute couture, the character played by Stella Gonet would periodically gaze at her beloved, & swoon ‘Jaaaaaaaaaaack!!!!!!!’

She speaks this evening for us all...

"Why, I'd as soon have a spit put through me, and be stuck upon a card in a collection of beetles, as lead the life I have been leading here" - Mr Meagles objecting to lockdown #LittleDorrit

Replying to @Dickens_Society: Little Dorrit really does have some of the most excellent lockdown quotes, doesn’t it?

“In #LittleDorrit,” said Orwell, “Dickens attacked English institutions with a ferocity that has never since been approached” - &, as Arthur Clennam retreats baffled from the Circumlocution Office, I pause in my reading to reflect on how timeless it all still seems...

Keir Starmer's demand has been turned down. No10 has ruled out prioritising key workers for vaccination until all 9 Phase 1 groups are done - ie, everyone over 50 as they are at greater risk. PM's spokesman points out that all over 50s "includes a lot of key workers".

Interesting. It’s been a trait for decades: send only enough troops to fail, enter the EU only enough to be sidelined, devolve only enough to destabilise without settling anything. We aim for best of all worlds and sometimes achieve it, but often end up with worst of all.

This is exactly the problem with the #StonehengeTunnel. Either build a full length one that goes all the way under the World Heritage Site, or leave the WHS well alone & save £2 bn. Don’t go for the current compromise, which is effectively the worst of both worlds.

Fabulously ghoulish & vivid image! #LittleDorrit

Thrilled that our next guest on @TheRestHistory will be Michael Wood (aka @mayavision0), helping us to explore the immense theme that is the history of China.

Do please let us have your questions!

Replying to @dcsandbrook: Yes - we're thrilled to be welcoming Michael Wood (@mayavision) onto the podcast. By far the best TV historian of all time…

Yes - we're thrilled to be welcoming Michael Wood (@mayavision) onto the podcast. By far the best TV historian of all time and an unrivalled hero of mine, if that doesn't sound too soppy (and I don't care if it does). Questions about China please - anything at all!

“He had a weird appearance of having hanged himself at one time or other, and of having gone about ever since, halter and all, exactly as some timely hand had cut him down.”

There never was anyone like Dickens for fusing comedy with horror... #LittleDorrit

“Nothing to see but streets, streets, streets. Nothing to breathe but streets, streets, streets. Nothing to change the brooding mind, or raise it up.” #LittleDorrit

“Everything was bolted and barred that could by possibility furnish relief to an overworked people.”

Dickens’ brilliantly grim portrayal of a typical London Sunday... #LittleDorrit

#Dominion is published in paperback in the UK on 6 August: a history less of Christianity than of what has made Christianity revolutionary & transformative over the course of its 2000 year existence.
